Sports Tours
In 2008, the U11A rugby squad became the first team from Hornsby House School to go on a sports tour when they were hosted by Berkhamsted Prep School, Tring RFC and Old Fullerians RFC. The U11 girls went on a successful hockey tour to Norfolk and the boys on a cricket tour to Sussex.
The Sports Department is keen to give the boys and girls in their final year at the school an introduction to touring but is aware that they should still have lots to look forward to at their secondary schools. For this reason the tours are based in the UK so that they are not too far from home but feel like they are travelling away as a team.
U11 Rugby Tour 07/08 – Berkhamsted
Mr Peters, Mr Saunders and Mr Gedye travelled with the U11 boys to Berkhamsted Prep School. Before their first game they had a training session at the senior school with Saracens and England prop Nick Lloyd. Berkhamsted Prep had a very strong side and despite a valiant effort the boys were given a real lesson in team play and controlling the contact area. A team meal out in the town afterwards allowed them to put it behind them and look forward to their last game against Old Fullerians RFC U11s. In torrential rain and freezing temperatures the boys put in a magnificently brave performance and only lost narrowly to a strong club side. The Old Fullerians ensured that the boys defrosted in time for their trip to London Irish vs London Wasps on St Patrick’s Day! Despite losing both their games it was a fantastic experience for all the boys and a great introduction to how fun touring can be.
U11 Hockey Tour 08/09 – Norfolk
The U11 girls travelled to Norfolk for Hornsby’s first ever girls’ sports tour to Hethersett Old Hall School, where they were very welcome. The girls enjoyed swimming in the pool, training sessions in the sports hall and also joined in a PE lesson.
They took part in three hockey matches against Norfolk independent schools at the University of East Anglia Sports Park. The girls beat Norwich High School for Girls 1-0 and followed this with an extremely tight match against Hethersett Old Hall in which they were victorious 3-2. The girls finished the afternoon with a solid 2-0 win against Taverham Hall School. The girls proved fantastic ambassadors for Hornsby House School and have set the standard for future sports tours.
U11 Cricket Tour 07/09
The U11 boys sports tour was a long cricket weekend in Sussex. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Brambletye School for the two nights that they stayed over, the highlight being an outstanding game of cricket against the Brambletye Colts, followed by travelling the short distance to Ashdown House the following day for a match on their 1st X1 square. Overall the boys did Hornsby House proud, both on and off the field and they will hopefully get the chance to tour further afield with their clubs and secondary schools as they get older.
